Intranet Solutions
An Intranet is essentially 'a company version of the Internet' - in other words a website which is available only to users within your company. An Intranet is held within an organisation i.e. viewable only from within the company network. Typically an Intranet will be used to increase workforce productivity, enabling staff to access information and systems in a simple to use browser environment with which they are already familiar. With Intranets, organisations can make more information available to employees on a "pull" basis (ie: employees can link to relevant information at a time which suits them rather than being deluged indiscriminately by emails).
Extranet Solutions
An Extranet is essentially 'a private version of the Internet' - in other words a website or portion of a website which is protected by password control. The control could be multi-layered, for example some users may have access to all of the Extranet while others only have access to a limited area.
Extranet solutions are excellent both for providing customers with targeted additional services and also for extending the reach of an Intranet so that employees can access information securely when they are outside the company network.

Significant value can be provided by using Intranet and Extranet solutions as a window to your existing systems. An early example of this was the UPS online parcel tracking system. UPS had a tracking system for many years, but it was only when they developed a window into this system (Extranet) that full advantage was available to their clients. Of course as a result of this strategic move not only were UPS able to reduce staff required for telephone tracking enquiries they also increased their market share by providing a superior service to that of their competitors.
